The above is for a person who has had  DNA tested through vendors other than FamilyTreeDNA, such as Ancestry, Sorensen, Relative Genetics, DNA Heritage, Oxford Ancestors, DNA Fingerprint, Genebase, etc  to put in DNA markers for the direct male Smith/Smyth/Smythe/Schmidt surname markers that are the property of that person, either because the DNA tested is that ones or he or she has had permission to test DNA on behalf of another person as that one's representative, as a way to look up and compare with others. You also, if not a FTDNA member already,  have the choice to upload your markers through FTDNA. It is a way to additionally, besides with the vendor you had your DNA tested, list your Smiths info to compare with other Smiths, regardless of vendor. Why would you do this? You share your markers so that you can compare your markers with other participants regardless of vendor and so that others will have a chance to see and compare possible matches or want to contact you for more info.  The markers are listed by vendor kit only, so that you may be anonymous unless you choose otherwise; you do need to be registered and logged in to this site to add, enter or post, mostly for spam reasons. For example you opt to, on other parts of the site, post in a way that lets people know that you are this membername, then you are choosing for your info to become public.
