Some of the information on Samuel Smith has not been confirmed. The birth and marriage dates were given by Barbara Newham. (I have not reviewed her sources.) I have not located him after the 1860 Census in Santa Rosa Co FL.

The middle initial may be J. or S..

"Abstracts of Granville County N. C. - Book 12 1830-1833" page 284, list the following information:

#249 Feb. court 1832 - Inventory of personal estate of SAMUEL S. SMITH, deceased, by JAMES M. SATTERWHITE. admstr., Nov 20, 1831

#250, 251 - Dec 6, 1831 - Sale of estate of SAMUEL S. SMITH by J. M. SATTERWHITE, admstr.

This Samuel S. Smith may be the father or other relative of the Samuel Smith married to Elizabeth Satterwhite. The father of Elizabeth Satterwhite was James M. Satterwhite from Granville County, NC.

Individual note:

Her nickname "Bettie" is noted in a family Bible held by Betty Smith, a daughter of Derrell and Mattie Smith.

The following story has been handed down by descendants and people living in the Wing, Covington County, AL area. Elizabeth Satterwhite Smith only had one arm. ( I don't know if she was born without an arm or if she lost one in an accident.)

All four of her boys, William, George, Archibald and Darrell, fought in the Confederate War. I believe that they may have 1st joined with the Confederate forces and then deserted and joined the Union Army. Three of the sons, Archibald, Derrell M. and William J. are listed with the First Florida (US) Cavalry, Company B. They all joined this troop on 1/25/1864 at Barrancas as a refugee from a "rebel state" and were all mustered out 11/17/65 at Tallahassee.

The stories also include one about them not returning right after the war ended.
Everyone thought they were dead when they did not return right after the war ended. There Mother Elizabeth was distraught. She had lost all of her sons.
A few months later the Smith boys came home one after the other on the same day. She was so excited. Imagine thinking that all of your boys were dead and then to have them all return on the same day.

The story of their late return holds true with the 11/17/1865 discharge date. Additional information found on the internet includes the history of the 1st Florida Calvary states that they were not discharged until hostile sentiments had time to fade.

Additional information about the 1st Florida Calvary can be found on a web site named "Wards & Bakers of the Deep South" in several of the online newsletters. The articles are written by Mark Curenton of Apalachicola, Florida.

NOTE: The family name of Satterwhite is questionable. The name was supplied by Barbara Newham. She got the information from other researchers who claim to have talked with someone who recalled the name of Satterwhite. If she is the same Satterwhite from Granville County, North Carolina, this is contrary to her place of birth as noted in the 1850 and 1860 census. Her birth place was listed as South Carolina. Another factor to be considered is the marriage date as listed in the marriage records of Granville County, North Carolina is after the birth date established for her oldest son Archibald.
