"The Northwest area of Okaloosa County was settled by families mostly coming down the Yellow River from Conecuh County, Alabama. Many of the family names of Baggett, McLeod, Campbell, Hart, Steele, McCaskill, McKinnon, Barrow and Howard, to name only a few, are listed in the 1820 Census and some are on the 1818 Tax List for Conecuh County.

Some came into Florida before the Spanish gave up control of the area and are listed in a Spanish Census taken in 1820 - such as Wilkinson, McDavid, Boyet, Cobbe, Hall, Campbell, and McCaskill. In the Public Land Claims to Land in West Florida, Dec 10, 1824, some of the following names are listed in habitation and cultivation of land between Feb 22, 1819 and July 17, 1821: Campbell, Wilkinson, Baggot, Cobb, Barrow, Hart, Ward, Morrison, McCaskill, McKinnon, Fowler, (Claim #237, pp 61-63)."

The above is from an article published in the Genealogical Society of Okaloosa County Vol VIII, Winter 1984, Issue 30. The article is EARLY HISTORY OF OKALOOSA COUNTY by Martha Rogers.

During an interview with James Barnhill of Baker, Okaloosa County, Florida he showed where the Barrow Plantation was located. He stated that the homestead was located on the West side of the Yellow River in Florida. (T5N, SE 1/4 S8 & NE 1/4 S17, R23W) He stated that John Barrow had homesteaded the property around 1818 and that they were from Warren County, Georgia.

Another researcher, Christine Reis of Milton, FL, believes that John's middle name may be Jasper. She could not locate her source for this information, but will forward the source when she locates it.
