Note for:   Miriam Evaline Manley,   25 JAN 1856 - MAY 1942          Index
[kerrysmith]

Evaline was living in the home of her former daughter-in-law, Olga Smith, at #1 Orphan Street, Pryor, Oklahoma in 1942. The house was located on the corner of East Main Street, (later Graham Avenue), and Orphan Street, on top of a small hill.
On April 27, 1942 a devestating tornado formed between Pryor and Claremore to the west. It followed a northeast track until it picked up Highway 20, nine miles west of Pryor. From that point, it tracked directly east, following the highway
into and through Pryor.
Evaline had had visitors that day and had missed her nap. When the family rushed in to get her to go to the storm cellar, she refused, saying that she was "going to take her nap."
After the tornado, she was found, still in her bed, with the west wall of the house just inches from her body. The wall was being held up by a one inch arm of a studio couch that was put in her room for visitors. She was not injured in any
way, however the house was completely gone, except for the one wall of her room that had protected her.
With the home totally destroyed, she was moved to another home located north of Pryor. A short time later, at the other home, she fell from a high porch and suffered a broken hip. She died a short time later.

**Source of information: Jerri G. (Smith) Chasteen, daughter of Olga Smith, and living in the same house at the time of the tornado.
