Mance was supposed to have been baptized during a revival at Concord Chur ch in 1926. According to Inez Yeager Smith, Mance was walking through t he kitchen at home during the week of the revival when he asked Myrtle, h is wife, "I wonder why Sam (his Brother) has not joined the church." Where as Myrtle replied, without thinking, "Why haven't you?" Mance only walk ed out without saying anything. Myrtle later said she had no idea what ma de her say that except it was from the Lord. Mance joined the church th at night and was baptized with his three children that had been saved th at week, Esther, Buford, and Vernard Smith. Sam Smith, his brother, also l ater joined the church. Inez stated that Vernard was 16 at the time he w as saved, giving me the year of incident. Vernard was born in 1910.

07/03/2001 According to the 1900 census, Mance was born in 1881, not 18 82 like all other records indicate.
07/03/2001 His death certificate states 1883??? As year of birth.

10-28-96 Talked to Ottis Keller about his family and my G-grandfather, S am Smith. Ottis' G-mother lived with them for a time . Ottis indicated th at maybe my G-grandfather moved to Texas and lived to possibly be very ol d. He said he may have fell off of a porch and never recovered.

01-13-2000 Researched at Wallace State in the death certificates. Still ha ve not found Sam M. Smith. Did, however, look up some of the kid's D. C.' s. For William Mance Smith the father listed was as "unknown". For Willio us Samuel Smith his father was listed as Bud Smith. Ruby Reid Taylor has o nce mentioned that Sam's nickname was Buddy, but I never gave it credi t. He may be found later under this name.

01-13-2000 Also on this date, talked to Ruby Reid Taylor to confirm the Bu ddy name. It was indeed correct. She also said that her grandfather did re turn at some point and worked around the house and left Lucinda some mone y. This was told to Ruby by her mother, Mary Eveline Smith Reid. Her remem brance of a letter, told also to her by her mother, was that there was a l etter sent asking about the children, but did not have any return addre ss on it. She stated that after Sam left the family there was a Mr. Busb y? that helped the boy's with plow repair and such. He was supposed to ha ve been a neighbor. It was stated that whenever Mattie Keller and Betty Ke ller, Sam Smith's sisters, visited, they would always ask if any word w as heard from Sam. Aunt Frances was always teased about having some brothe r's and sister's somewhere. Her reply would always be "No, my Daddy wou ld never do that!" But as Ruby Reid Taylor stated, he already had his n ew girlfriend pregnant when he left.

01/18/2000 Looked at Wallace State for more information on Sam. Did not fi nd anything of substance. On Sam's son, Willious Samuel Smith, death certi ficate, the listed mother was Molly Brooks. I called Ruby Reid Taylor abo ut this and she had no idea where Cecil Smith, Willoius' son, came up wi th this. He did get the nickname right, being Buddy Smith. However, wh en I kidded her about this Molly Brooks being her step-grandmother, she st ated, "No, that Elv Crumbley already had that title". This led to other i nformation about the Crumbley family. She said that Elv Crumbley had a sis ter, Jersey (Jesse Bell) Crumbley, that married a Rasco/Rascal (Thom as J. Rascal). She had a daughter, Nola Mae Rasco/Rascal that married Rayb urn Cramer. She felt that Nola Mae was still alive living in Tennesse e. I did not find any phone number for her listed online. Further resear ch at Wallace should now find the Crumbly family that Sam was involved i n.

01/21/2000 Searched Wallace for Crumbley/Crumbly families. Located a Willi am Crumbly, age 25, in 1900 census at Bailey District, E.D. 60 household n o. 27. He was the brother to the rest of the family, his sisters. They we re Jensey age 22, Orpie age 18, and Mary age 17. This is the only possib le family due to the sister Jensey. They all were born in Georgia. Ruby T aylor told me they called Jessy Bell Jersey. (Close enough). What happen ed to their mother and father? Tried to find the family in the 1880 Georg ia soundex, did not find them. (William and Jensey/Jersey would have be en there.) Did look at the marriage record for the correct spelling of RAS CAL. It was mistyped and should be RASCOE.

Note: 07/03/2001 Found William Crumby (note spelling) in the online cens us for 1900. The copied census records at Wallace has his name spelled CRU MBLY. Probably why I never found the family in 1880 Georgia.

02/18/2000 Received land entry file, homestead, from the records administr ation. Nothing of much consequence. Did get Sam's signature from the recor ds and what type of dwellings he had.

03/13/2000 Received the land records for William Henry Ellis, with Samu el being witness. It is stated by William B. Lindsey that Samuel's midd le name is Martin, most likely after his grandfather, Martin Putman. Chang ed records to reflect that Sam was actually Samuel and M. did not stand f or Mance as I had thought, but Martin instead.

Dad and I visited with Ruby Reid Taylor and this is the story she tells a bout Sam Smith:
It seems, she said, that Sam had moved the Crumbly girl into the barn a nd not the house. She said her mother, Mary Eveline Smith and her uncle S am were going to whip the girl with a hickory. Their mother, Minta, wouldn 't allow it. Ruby said that her mother never said the two left together b ut that the girl was not to be seen after Sam left. Who knows for su re at this point.
