  • Notes
    • The probable mother of Edward2 Smith who died between 28 March and 27 April 1772 in Brunswick County, VA, was Elizabeth Smith Blayton, who died on 5 June 1766 in Brunswick County, VA, and who mentioned her sons, William and Edward Smith in her Will recorded on 26 January 1767 in Brunswick County. The Will reads as follows:

"In the name of God, Amen, the 5 day of June 1766

Being sick in body but of good and sound memory thanks be to Almighty God and calling to remembrance the uncertain estate of this Transitory life and that all Flesh must yield to Death -- when it shall be pleased God to call, do make, constitute, ordain and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, revoking and disannulling by these presents all and every testament or testaments Will and Wills heretofore by me made and declared either by word or writing and this is to be taken only for my last will and testament and none other and first being penitent and sorry from the bottom of my heart for my sins past most humbly desire forgiveness for the same. I give and commit my soul unto Almighty God my Savior and Redeemer in whom and by the merits of Jesus Christ I trust and believe assuredly to be saved and to have full remission and forgiveness of all my sins and that my soul with my Body at a general day of the Resurrection shall live again with joy and through the merits of Christ['s] death and passion possess and inherrit [sic] the Kingdom of Heaven prepared for his Elect and Chosen and my Body to be Buried in such a place where it shall please my Executors herein after named to appoint and now for the settling of my Temporary Estate and such goods, chattels and debts as it hath pleased God far above my desserts to bestow upon me I order give and dispose the same in manner and form following that is to say, first, I will that all these & Dues as I own[owe] in Right and Conscience to any manner of person or persons whatsoever shall be well and truly contented and paid or ordained to be paid within convenient time after my decease by my Executors hereafter named.

Item, I give and bequeath to my son, William Smith, one mare and colt, one feather bed and bedstead.

Item, I give and bequeath to my son, Edward Smith, all the remaining part of my estate, real and personal, and I do hereby appoint my son, Edward Smith, my whole Executor of my whole estate.

Given under my hand and seal this 8th day of June 1766.

At a Court held for Brunswick County the 26th day of January 1767, this Will was presented in Court, sworn to by Edward Smith, the Executor therein named and was proved by the oaths of William Vaughan, Sarah Smith, and Elizabeth Smith, the witnesses thereto, and ordered to be recorded and on the Motion of the said Executor certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form, he having with Henry Cook and Richard Smith, his securities, entered into and acknowledged bond in the penalty of five hundred pounds with condition according to law.

      Teste: N. Edwards J. D.L.S”.[1]

Edward Smith of Sussex County, VA, bought land from Thomas Harrison of Brunswick County, Parish of St. Andrews, on 25 February 1765 for 150 pounds, located on the south side of Three Creeks and adjoining William Adams' line, John Maclin, and John Willis.[2]

Probably William Smith was the elder son and had been left property in his father's Will. His mother, Elizabeth, had married a Blayton after her first husband's death, and left most of her property to her second son, Edward, making him the Executor of her Will.
