  • Notes
    • Benjamin Smith, born between 1790 and 1800 (probable), in Montgomery County, VA (probable); died between Census Day 1860 and December 1861 in Jefferson County, TN (in the part of Jefferson County, TN that is now Hamblen County, TN). We believe that he had only one child, Byrd Smith (see below), with his first wife -- Unknown -- no birth date or place, death date between June 3, 1814 and October 1814 in Jefferson County, TN, no marriage date -- although probably @ September 1813 and probably in Jefferson County, TN. With his second wife -- Kizzah/Kissie Staples -- who he married in October of 1814 in Jefferson County, TN, he had at least nine additional children: Barnett W. Smith, Luna P. Smith, A.G. Smith, Samuel Y. (probably "Samuel Yewell" Smith, Benjamin T. Smith, Mary J. Smith, Susan Dorthula Smith, Elizabeth A. Smith and Sarah C. Smith. Benjamin Smith is believed to have been buried in the Smith Cemetery near Morristown, TN -- destroyed by construction of Interstate 81. We believe that this Benjamin Smith had a number of brothers, including: the Rev. Barnett Smith (a Methodist minister), Absalom Smith, Sr. (who died in Jefferson County, TN @ 1818), and Elias Smith.
