  • Notes
    • Some sources say 1753. From Darrell Smith
In referring to the Crown Hill cemetery site you gave, there are both dates given. The header listing the date says 1763, while lower in the text it says 1753. If you click on the tombstone the date is 1753. Obviously that site is not reliable for the date.

The DAR site says it gets its info from the Mass Soldiers & Sailors vol 14, which does indeed mention this Hezekiah Smith, but without d.o.b.

Conversation on RootsWeb with Marian M., a descendant of Hezekiah, mentions that her cousin has the family Bible. The d.o.b. that she gives is 1763, and I assume she takes that from the family Bible.

Hezekiah supposedly enlisted at the age of 14. If he was born 1753, he would have enlisted in 1767. If 1763, that would be 1777. I think the latter is more likely.
    • the birth of Hezekiah in CT needs further research. Many of us have searched the DE records but have come up empty handed. Also a fact that the mother of Mary Ann Rector had died is controversial as well. Most records dispute this, however she was at the Neville household when she met and married Hezekiah. The question I alway had was if Hezekiah was born in DE why did he sign up in MA unless he was born closer to that region. Why not sign up in DE?
Hezekiah had quite a few offspring all born in KY. It is said that he moved to IN because of his religious beliefs regarding slavery. Many of the Rector family had by then moved to KY as well and then to parts of OH. They had close ties the Smith's and the Rector's..
Unfortunately there is not information regarding Hannah McCoy, the first bride of Simeon, I have researched. Simeon and several related relatives did make the move to Fremont Co., IA.. Simeon did remary there. Two of his previous offspring, Marquis 'Marcus' and Andrew did move west by covered wagon stopping when they needed cash and worked as blacksmiths. Both had served in the Union army during the Civil War. They eventually left Iowa and reached CA where my great grandfather, Thomas Jefferson was born. The Indian wars were at that time in eastern WA had not yet been resolved. Once the Indian problem had been resolved both brothers and offspring moved to eastern WA. Marquis settled just across the border in ID. He once ran for congress on the Populist Party but lost. Many sources use his recollections regarding Hezekiah and his two brothers Simeon and Daniel as I had previously sent you. Whether this information is fact or fiction it is just what was passed down to him by oral tradition. The information as to the existence of his two brothers [Daniel and Simeon] have never been verified.
However the son of Marcus, Thomas Jefferson was born in Shasta Co., CA before the two brothers moved on to eastern WA.- Allan Smith
