      THE CHARITON PATRIOT
      Chariton, Iowa
      Wednesday, September 27, 1893

Elizabeth Cook was born in Redstone Co. Virginia, March 11, 1805. She passed away suddenly, September 12th, 1893, from the home of her daughter, in certain hope of a blessed immortality.

In early childhood, she removed with her parents to Harrison Co. Ohio. At the early age of thirteen she gave her heart to God and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which she was a faithful devoted member until death.

She was married in 1830 to James Smith. They removed to Iowa in 1854 and the year following she was bereft of her husband. To them were born eight children, of whom three survive to cherish her precious memory.

For about three years she has been in declining health and since January last it has been evident that the days of her earthly sojourn were numbered. Her death was sudden, the cause was internal hemorrhage, but her peace and rest were complete. A life disciplined by sorrow and trial has found congenial environment in the worship of the skies.

All who knew her and those who loved her dearly, feel that her entrance into the heavenly home is the assured victory of her life.

The funeral was held from the Methodist church in Russell, conducted by Rev. D. L. Maine of Chariton, and was attended by a large concourse of people, who cherish a blessed memory.
