  • Notes
    • This branch of Smiths believes the family came from Ireland. That info comes from grandchildren who grew up around Charles William Smith, my mother, Charle's granddaughter, also believed the ancestry was Irish. Charles was born in Ontario, went to Brandon, Manitoba, which is where he married Elizabet Gudmundsdottir, who was an Icelandic immigrant. They had the first of their nine children in Brandon, then homesteaded in the Swan River Valley, also Manitoba, Canada. I haven't found my family on this site yet, but I did find a family with a lot of first names of Leroy, Charles, William and combinations of. LeRoy is a family name and my mom was pretty upset when I didn't give it to my son. I have the entire downline for this branch, but I couldn't figure out how to extract, only that family grouping on ancestry. It is on ftdna and gedmatch. It is nearly impossible to identify which Smith family Charles belonged to, as there were several Charles Smiths born in 1876 in Ontario, though I'm beginning to suspect his family came up from the US. My own paternity is unclear, so the Smith name has continued down maternal lines, through my mother, to me, to my daughter, whose name is hyphenated.
