Samuel Emerson Smith was born in Hollis, New Hampshire March 12 1788. He studied at the Groton Academy and graduated at Harvard in 8080. He read law with Samuel Dana at Groton and died at Wiscasset, Maine March 8,1860
    • Governor of Maine. He was born in Hollis, New Hampshire, graduated from Harvard University in 1808, and became an attorney in Wicasset, Maine, then part of Massachusetts. He served in the Massachusetts legislature in 1819, and after Maine attained statehood he served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1820 to 1821. In 1821 he was appointed Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for the district that included Wicasset, and after a judicial reorganization he was appointed to its successor court, remaining on the bench until 1830. In 1830 he was the successful Democratic nominee for Governor, and he was reelected in 1831 and 1832. Smith's term was marked by the relocation of the state capitol from Portland to Augusta and efforts to settle the boundary between Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, which were finally completed in 1842. After leaving office Smith was again appointed Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, serving until 1837. In 1835 he was named to a commission that revised and published Maine's statutes. Smith lived in retirement from the early 1840s until his death in Wicasset.
