Sorting out two Thomas Smiths SC and Mississippi
Smith DNA Matched Group GRP-J-M172-8 Posted by smithsworldwide in Smith DNA Group Discussion GRP-J-M172-8 on November 13, 2023 Views:(421) Replies (0) PostID:3373 Please Login/Register to reply to this topic Hat tip to Tanner Smith for suggesting that Thomas A Smith b c 1801 SC (or nC) who married Elizabeth Locke is not the same as Thomas Smith b c 1802 Edgefield Co SC. First, will go through the 2 distinct families and then discuss Stephen S Smith who died in 1901 in Le Flore Co OK and was in Lee Co MS. Family #1 - Thomas A Smith b 1801 SC (according to 1850 Madison Co MS census) married Elizabeth J Locke, daughter of Benjamin Roots Locke who had married Zilpha Sullivan in 1808 Brunswick Co NC. He is found on the 1840 Brunswick Co NC census (the young male son is apparently Josiah A Smith), 1850 Madison Co MS, 1860 Madison Co MS. His will is in 1853 in Madison Co MS Of note is that there is an older Josiah S Smith, said to be son of Thomas Smith in Brunswick Co VA., named his first child Thomas and will is in 1859 Brunswick Co NC. The Smith DNA project does not currently have any known testers for Thomas Aiken (need source for Aiken) Smith b 1770 d 1820 Brunswick Co NC m Jane Jordan(if accurate, possibly the marriage was in Horry Co SC in 1791) but putting out a call for anyone that believes this is their line that has done DNA, particularly a male Smith for YDNA, to come join the project. Family #2 Thomas Smith b 1802 SC m Elizabeth. Found on the 1850 Edgefield Co SC census with children James, Jane, Stephen S, John W, Overton (Obadiah?) W and Minick, then had moved to Heard Co GA by 1860, and again on the 1870 Heard Co GA census. Of this family, at least two of them went to Lee Co MS (1860 census - Stephen S and brother Overton/Obadian next door-believe this to be Mileage Obadiah Smith b 1837 who married Ann Mansell in 1874 in Saltillo, Lee Co MS. ) These 2 Thomas Smiths CANNOT be the same person as, even though the birth dates are close, they are in different locations in 1850. One member is a descendant of Family#2 and matches into this group (GRP-J-M172-8 https://www.smithsworldwide.org/tng/smtrees.php?grouping=GRP-J-M172-8 ) Wilkins C Smith will of 1851 in Edgefield Co SC mentions son Thomas. This Thomas, born c 1802 in Edgefield Co SC has a son Stephen S in the 1850 Edgefield Co SC census. Note that Thomas also has a son John W and son Overton M. Thomas is next found in 1860 and 1870 Heard Co GA. Following son Stephen S, he married Martha Mills in 1856 in Crawford Co GA, in 1860 Beasley, Crawford Co GA in 1860, Lee Co Mississippi with new wife Mary in 1870, and 3rd wife Eliza in 1880 in Lee Co MS. Significantly, next door to him in 1870 in Lee Co MS is his younger brother Odleton/Obadiah/Overton Mileage Overton Smith married Ann Mansell in 1874 in Lee Co MS and is then found in 1880 Lee Co MS. John William Smith, another son of Thomas Smith, married his wife Florilla Ann in 1878 in Lee Co MS before moving to Lauderdale Co AL in 1880. Although we do not have a YDNA tester yet for M O Smith, if you are a male Smith of this line, do consider getting a YDNA test as it appears almost certain (barring an NPE) that you would also fit this grouping. |
