- James? (Wayne Co TN? )
In a narrative by a great grandaughter of George A J Smith, she states that after John Dawson's first wife died he followed Hiram Gill to Yell Co. Ark. and married Mary Jane Gill in 1846. If that is the case then perhaps where Hiram Gill resided in Tenn. is where John Dawson lived. From the 1830 US census Hiram Gill was located in Wayne Co. Tenn. After searching the 1830 census the best candidate for John Dawson's father is James Smith (not James L Smith) in Wayne Co. James Smith 1830 Census Wayne Co. Tenn - Males: 2 under 5, 1 @ 5-10, 2 @ 10-15, 1 @ 30-40 Females: 1 under 5, 2 @ 5-10, 1 @ 10-15, 1 @ 30-40.
Both John Dawson and Bradford Smith have sons named James.

Hiram Gill left Wayne Co. Tenn. travelling to Yell Co. Ark. in 1839. John Dawson probably left about 1845 to Ark. with 2 children after his first wife died.
George Gill (Hiram's father) shows up on the 1820 census in Wayne Co., then shows up in Hardin Co. on the 1830 census and also his death in 1833 is recorded in Hardin Co. An interesting possibility is Joseph Smith in the 1840 Hardin Co. census. (There is a George Smith that matches both age and children living almost next to Joseph Smith in the 1840 Census, but most of the info looks like our George Andrew Jackson Smith is the GAJ Smith in Tipton Co.)
In the Tipton Co. 1840 census, Sarah Smith (John's mother?) lives near G A J Smith and her family listed could include both John Dawson and Bradley. However on the 1850 census one of her remaining sons birthplace is listed as Virginia and all of the Smith brothers list theirs as Tennessee.- masculpt
