- Frank D. Smith, son of Hulbert Bateman and Sarah Elizabeth (LaFleur) Smith, was born in May 28, 1888, in Brasher, St. Lawrence, New York and died August 30, 1969, in Massena, St. Lawrence, New York at the age of 81. On October 12, 1910, he married Helen G. Brown, daughter of James and Elizabeth (Hall) Brown, at the Trinity Church in Potsdam, St. Lawrence, New York. Helen Brown was born in January 30, 1890, in Potsdam, St. Lawrence, New York. She made her Confirmation on June 10, 1906, in the Trinity Church in Potsdam, St. Lawrence, New York. She died in February 09, 1966, in Massena, St. Lawrence, New York at the age of 76. Frank?s first job was working at a livery stable in Potsdam, New York. His next job was working in a wood shop in Potsdam, New York keeping the fires going during the winter. It was at the wood shop that Frank learned the skills to become a carpenter. On June 05, 1917, Frank registered for the World War I draft. He was never drafted. In 1930 Frank?s home on Walnut Street in Potsdam, New York was valued at $3000 and Frank was working as carpenter. During the depression Frank worked a couple of summers in New Jersey on railroad bridges. Each summer he took his family down to New Jersey for a couple of weeks in his 1924 Model T Ford.
In the early 1930?s , during the depths of the depression, Helen received a letter from her brother Roy, who was living in Elmira, NY, that he had left her $500.00 in his will. Helen wrote back that she appreciated that he had included her in his will, but with the hard times they were having with Frank being out of work that it would nice if he could provide her the $500.00 now. Roy wrote back that he was not the one who decided to have an army for children. From that day on Helen never wrote or spoke to Roy again.
In 1938 Frank moved his family to the Russell farm on Route 56 in Norfolk, New York. In 1948 Frank and Helen moved to a farm in Louisville, New York. When Frank retired they moved to a small home in Massena, New York.
