  Oscar Frederick Smith, b 4 Jun 1856 Madrid, NY, d 2 Oct 1952 Flandreau, Moody Co, SD, m 14 Nov 1878 Jennie Newbury, b 29 Dec 1861, d 25 Dec 1939 Yankton, Yankton Co, SD, dau of John & Sarah Anger Newbury. He started work in the woods when he was 16, in the woods sixty miles north of Menominee in big pines for four years. They sawed down timber, in the spring waited until the ice went out, then went down with the log drive. He cooked one winter for 40 men, four meals a day, before daylight, after dark, and two meals between.
