Need Eyeballs on Thomas Smith of VA m Miss Davis
Two lines that use some of the same research to claim a common ancestor, but both lines conflict on YDNa. Source of the confusion is an article from Pinoeer Families of Callaway County, Missouri, which says that a Thomas Smith of England came to America and settled in Virginia. His son Thomas Jr married a Miss Davis and settled in South Carolina. Son John Smith married, 1st, Rebecca Jeffers, and second Sarah Moseley. His son through Sarah Mosely, Nimrod Smith married Celia Gunn and settled in Callaway County, MO in 1837.

Line #1. Thomas Smith b 1720 Surry or Brunswick Co VA m Elizabeth Ann Davis (daughter of Moses Davis and Mary Smith) in Guilford/Moore co NC and died in York County, SC in 1800. Children's list needs to be sourced and validated, especially since the list locations are not consistent

Line #2 Thomas Smith b 1674 Northamshire, England d 1720 Virginia m Martha Thomas. Son Thomas Smith II was born in 1720 in Virginia m Eleanor Davis. (One date has his death as 1797 in Rockingham but this is a conflation with a different Thomas Smith who died in 1797 in Rockingham County NC and married Elizabeth Witt-NOT the same person). Thomas Smith III married a Unis (see document from Norah Brashear) and went to Goose Creek - Knox County and Clay County Kentucky. A son of Thomas Smith, referenced in the above document, was born in 1754 Virginia and d 1840 in Clay County, Kentucky. There are a large number of Smith DNA Project members who descend from John and match on YDNA at Group GRP-I-M253-17. There is also some YDNA testers for Benjamin Smith b c 1780 NC d 1857 Clay County KY who married Celia Hall who match into the same group. Another set of matches are from John Smith with 1787 will in Franklin County, North Carolina m Elizabeth Hawkins.

Locations fitting in or not with this narrative are that Thomas Smith III is said to have married unknown Unis on 29 Nov 1772 in York Co SC, which fits in with the story from Callaway Co MO that the Smiths went from Virginia to York County, SC and thence to Kentucky, possibly being in North Carolina between SC and KY (See Mary Smith/Isaac Swafford where Isaac Swafford from NC (probably Rutherford County) and his son William Riley Swafford said to be born in Rutherford County NC). Not to be confused with a different isaac Swafford, probably from Randolph County, NC, who went to Union County, Indiana.

The line for John Smith m 1 Rebecca Jeffers and 2 Sarah Jane Mosley has a different location nexus. Rebecca Jeffers is said to have married John Smith b 1754 VA in 1779 Guilford Co NC and John Smith b 1786 is sadi to have been born in Ashe County, NC.

Would like to have direct descendants of Nimrod Smith who have done DNA come join the Smith DNA Project at FamilyTreeDNA. Prefer a male Smith descendant Iie your last name is Smith and you are a male) but autosomal testers with a good family line welcome as well. Or, if you have additional sources and other information that could help prove these lines, join in.

Neither of these two lines are the same as Thomas Smith m Elizabeth Witt who died in 1797 in Rockingham Co NC (will at this link). We are actively working on establishing a YDNA baseline for that Smith but there is no indication that that family was the one that went to Clay County KY. January 13, 2022
