- Based on my research the past few months, I'm pretty sure I've located
my William McVey Smith in the 1880, 1900, and 1910 census's. I
believe he used his mother's maiden name of McVey for about 30 years, and in 1880 as an infant, I'm think he may be listed under his mother's ex-husbands surname of Qualls, even though she divorced him over 10 years earlier she apparently continued to use the name until at least 1880. I still need to try to confirm a few relationships though before saying for sure it's him, but I've ruled out most of the
other possibilities. There was no father around in the 1880 census,
so, if I have the right mother for him, William and his sister would
most likely have been illegitimate. There is a Harrison Smith living
a few houses away from them in 1880 though. And I know from marriage and death records, his father was named Harry or Harrison.
Unfortunately, if I have the right mother for him, then the Harrison Smith living near them would've been his Uncle (mother's sister's
husband). So, I'm not sure if he would've been Williams father or
not. I believe that Harrison (John Harrison Smith) was the grandson
of a possible brother of the Benjamin Smith from the other kit. But pretty much all of the Smith's in the area probably trace back to the same Smith's a couple of generations past Benjamin, so I doubt I'll be able to prove anything unless more Smiths test.
