  • Notes 
    • This George Smith was born in Culpeper County,VA in 1749, and removed to Ashe County (now Watauga County) North Carolina where he is buried. Some of his descendants have attempted to put him into the Robert Smith/Mary Calthorpe family from York County, VA, but the dates and locations make that suspect. US Census and other legal documents verify his residence in NC. Hopefully, DNA evidence will exist to identify his true family origins. - Tamtalb@gmail.com

      Adding an additional note that in William and Mary Quarterly Vol 2 No 1 Jul 1893, George Smith son of Robert Smith is a twin to sister Lucy with birthdate Oct 4, 1769. That obviously conflicts with this George Smith
    • In Rebecca Dougherty Hyatt's booklet, *The Founder of Adams Name in Watauga County, NC* there is an article about George SMITH. In this article it states, *George SMITH was the son of Robert and Polly SMITH of Culpepper County, VA and the Grandfather of Betsy FLANNERY Adams.* In *The Heritage of Watauga County, Vol. 2*, it says George SMITH had a son named Abner.

    • My George Smith was born in Culpepper County, VA. I don't know of any siblings of his. His wife (Elizabeth Earls) was born in Granville County, NC and that is where they married. George and Elizabeth lived in Surry County, NC for a while. They were in the 1790 census. They lived in Ashe County, NC from 1791 to 1811. Several of their children married during that time and George and Elizabeth and some of the younger children moved
      to Lee County, VA near Jonesville and they lived in that area about 20 years. In 1834 they sold the VA land and came back to Cove Creek, Ashe County, NC. (now in Watauga County)

      2- Elizabeth (b. 25 May 1779: d. 20 Dec 1853) m. 22 Sep 1797 Archibald McElroy

      4- Susannah (b. 3 Oct 1783 in Warren County, NC) m. Nathaniel Daugherty in Ashe Co. NC. They lived, and she died in Lee County, VA.

      5- Martha (b. 25 Jul 1785: d. bef 1852 m. Mr. Isaacs about 1804

      6- Absalom (b. 7 Apr 1787 d. Dec 1814) m. Nancy Vanderpool

      7- John (b. 27 Sep 1788 in Surry Co., NC: d. 30 Sep 1793 in Ashe Co., NC)
