- Shot by Champ Ferguson Gang in Moodyville, Pickett Co., TN
George and Judy had their children. When the Civil War started they had a son John Booher Smith who went to fight. George stayed home with the family. They supposedly lived near Guntertown. For some reason George spent most of the time in a cave near the homeplace. Hiding out I guess. Anyway, somewhere between 1865-1870 one winter's day a snow had fallen and Judy had taken George some food. Meanwhile some of Champ Fergusson's gang followed her prints in the snow to the cave and captured George. They took him to Moodyville and tied him to a phone pole and shot him. No one knows where George is buried. I am still looking for info on Judy. My aunts told me their grandfather James F Smith told them the story of George so I know it is true. - Linda Sue Goodman
