Name |
Wesley Eugene Smith |
- There was some debate in my family that Wesley's middle name was Eugene vs Seable
- Although South Carolina has been mentioned orally, census records find them in Georgia. The family then travelled through Alabama and there is a branch from this tree of Smiths that stayed in Alabama. This family group then came to Lee County, Mississippi for awhile and finally onto LeFlore County Oklahoma settling in Monroe.
The following is from the book "In The Shadow of Sugarloaf Mountain" compiled by stories from families that were among the early settlers there:
Much of the following was written by Eva Alma Smith Terry.
Wesley Seable Smith was born in Georgia in September of 1864. Martha Louella Herring was born in Mississippi in August of 1874. They were married July of 1887. In 1895, Wesley and Luella with their families at the time moved from Mississippi to Oklahoma Indian Territory. The family lived in Stigler for a few years before moving to Monroe, LeFlore County, Oklahoma. They were hunting for a location, as farmers of the land, could make a living for their family. They made the move from Mississippi to Oklahoma in covered wagons. To this marriage two girls and five boys were born. The two girls died in infancy. The five boys grew to manhood and each left his heritage and mark in The LeFlore County area. The boys were Audie Clifton born in June of 1888, Otha Tracy born in June of 1892, Lester Luther born in March of 1894, Mabra Francis born in March of 1896 and Troy Estle born in November of 1900. Wesley and Louella were influential Christians in their farming community. After Wesley's death in July of 1919, Ella, as she called herself, moved into the town of Monroe from their beautiful country home near Sugarloaf Mountain. She maintained the hard working example set by her father in making a living for herself. She was a brick in the First Baptist Church.
