  Resident of Barnstable before 1643; admitted to the Church 10-13-1644; freeman 6-5-1651; served as Deputy to the General Court; attended of the Quakers to hear their defense and reported in their favor. Withdrew from the communion of the Church for conscientious reasons; was declared *not a member for that reason only* but restored later. He preached occasionally at Barnstable. In Sept. 1661 was minister of a Separatist church which was closed by a council which met 6-4-1662. He moved to Long Island, N.Y. and New Jersey, was ordained in Sandwich in 1675, then accepted a call to be pastor at Sandwich and served there 1673-1689. He was a member of Lieutenant Dimock's military Co. in Barnstable, 1643, Rep. to the General Court, Plymouth Colony, 1656-1657. 1671-1672 member of N.J. Assembly 1672- Assistant Judge of Woodbridge Township, N.J. 1675-Pastor, Barnstable, Barnstable, N.J. 1669-Constable of Woodbridge, N.J. 1653- Arbitor with R. Dennis to negotiate with the Indians Immigration: probably between 1630 and 1631 Aboard the *White Angel* from Kent [1630 according to *Colonial Clergy and Churches of New England*.] John Smith is on the list of the *Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, Mass.* in 1644 From *Barnstable Families*: SMITH. Rev. John Smith, dissident minister, was born in England about 1614. He was an early settler and Deputy of Barnstable, but left town after a controversy with Rev. Lothrop. Among his sins was pleading tolerance of Quakers, but this brought him back to the church in Sandwich 1673-89. He married the sister of Gov. Thomas Hinckley.
