  • Notes
    • From the Windsor Journal: "He commenced the settlement of this town. He was a man of eccentric character and of surprising agility and at the age of 60 could excel most young men in feats of jumping, wrestling &c. Many are the amusing stories related of his adventures and 'hair breadth escapes' which prove him to have been a man of real mettle, not a whit behind the hero of "the Pioneers." Capt. Smith was from "Number Four". in a canoe he came up river and brought seed wheat sufficient to sow 3 or 4 acres he had succeeded in clearing. The next spring he, with 3 or 4 others, returned and made Windsor, Vt. their permanent settlement.
