Sarah and Matthew Smith-Smithtown NY
this is Sarah (person ID I59495) the wife of Matthew (b 1747, d 1823). Their son was Richard.
They are buried in a wooded area near my home. I am not a Smith descendant. Rather I am a resident of St James, Long Island, NY. St James is a hamlet in the town of Smithtown. I grew up in Smithtown and now live in St James. That is my connection. The area were Matthew and Sarah are buried is across the street from the St James General Store which is advertised as “the oldest continually operated...”. My wife and I were out for a walk and saw several deer walking nearby. While watching them I noticed and American flag and then the headstones. It’s a residential area but very wooded. A third small headstone is also there, but no name or date is legible. There are also the Veteran of and Daughter of the Revolutionary shields mounted on a slab of concrete at the site. I’ve attached a photo.
